GDC Dentists’ Data Released – BSDHT are here to support you

We’ve received an update from the General Dental Council (GDC) about their latest report on dentists’ working patterns which was published on 10 April 2025.  This is the second year the GDC has collected this data and it includes responses from 30,066 dentists—two thirds of the UK dentist register. We’ve broken down the key points and what they might mean for you.

Highlights from the GDC Report

Nearly all the respondents (99%) are currently working in the dental sector, with 0.8% actively seeking work in the sector.  The survey found that four out of five dentists work in England, with 11% in Scotland, 5% in Wales, and 4% in Northern Ireland. More than half (59%) are self-employed, agency workers or locums, while 20% are employees, and 16% are business owners or part-owners.

Other findings from the data include:

  • 44% of dentists are working 30 hours per week or less.
  • The majority (86%) work predominantly or fully in clinical roles.
  • While 67% work in general dental practice, the remainder work across dental hospitals (6%), community dental services (5%), and other hospital settings (4%).
  • 61% are regularly working in one location, whilst 39% are regularly working in more than one location.
  • 42% of dentists spend at least 75% of their time delivering NHS care, with 15% working exclusively in NHS settings.
  • Conversely, 20% provide only private care, with a further 14% working predominantly (over 75% of their time) in private practice.

Why this matters to you

This data gives us a clearer picture of how dentists are operating, which directly impacts our day to day work as dental hygienists and dental therapists

Part-Time Trends

With nearly half of dentists working shorter hours, practices may rely more on your expertise to keep patient care running smoothly.

Regional Differences

In areas with fewer dentists (like Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland), your role could be even more vital to meeting demand.

NHS and Private Balance

The mix of NHS and private care might shape the treatments you’re supporting—whether it’s preventative NHS work or private cosmetic procedures.

Team Dynamics

If dentists in your practice work across multiple locations, you might find yourself stepping up to manage care independently at times.

Looking Ahead

The GDC sees this data as a tool for better workforce planning by health services and dental providers, which could improve patient care across the board. They’re encouraging dentists to keep updating their info—and there’s a chance similar surveys could come your way in the future – both from ourselves and from the GDC.  Your view could help shape how our profession is supported and recognised.  Your work is more vital than ever and these shifts could pave the way for greater autonomy, responsibility and career growth.
